Meet Eric

In October 2003, Eric underwent a life changing treatment – a laryngectomy. Not only this, but his daughter and wife were diagnosed with breast cancer around the same time, making this an extremely tough situation for them all. However, through their family’s determination and positive mindset, they got through their diagnosis and came out stronger than ever.

Post-surgery, Eric received the tremendous news that he’d been given the all-clear and both his daughter and wife are still here to tell the tale and are fighting fit and well.

Since losing his vocal cords, Eric has certainly proved life doesn’t stop there and has been inspiring others about his cancer diagnosis and life after a laryngectomy. He has joined numerous community groups and is Chairman of the Sheffield Head and Neck Cancer Support group, where he helps to raise funds for the association so members can enjoy days out together, which are well attended. Anyone who has suffered head and neck cancers, as well as their carers or family members, are welcome to attend.

In additional to this, Eric is a community member of the Barnsley group and has joined the Living with and Beyond Cancer group at Barnsley General Hospital. His role requires him to bring topics to the meeting for discussion such as how doctors and nurses can implement patient care to improve patients’ wellbeing. Plus, he even helps Yorkshire’s McMillan Cancer Support and attends webinars and events when needed to help raise funds towards a great cause.

He said, “Being involved with these groups has kept me active and has made me want to help people who have suffered the terrible disease.”

Eric continues to show his resilience and says his only goal is to reach 100 years of age and if he keeps on going the way he is, we are sure he will reach this incredible milestone.

He continues … “I am twenty years on and feeling great. Still baking and tending my very large garden.”

Eric must have some magic powers in his genes as he has proved that he is a cancer survivor, not sufferer!

He states, “Having the Atos Care nurses to help solve any problems is really good, knowing that there is someone there when faced with product problems.”
